Greetings to everyone!
Despite our (mostly) remote presence owing to COVID-19, the Center for Jewish Studies plans to have a very most exciting academic year.
First, we happily welcome our new colleague, Professor Roy Holler, a specialist in Israel Studies and comparative literature. Professor Holler will offer a number of courses that are entirely new to the University of Florida, ranging from “Introduction to Israel Studies” to “The Conflict in Stage and Screen.” You can read more about him 小飞机加速器下载. And there are other new courses from our faculty, ranging from “The Dreyfus Affair” (Professor Gayle Zachmann) to “Graven Images: Jews and Graphic Novels” (Leela Corman) as well as student favorites such as “Jews in American Popular Culture” (Professor Rachel Gordan); “The Pentateuch” (Robert Kawashima); and “Kafka and the Kafkaesque” (Professor Eric Kligerman). See all of our fall courses here.
Our signature public events will be remote this fall, but we will have plenty of them, so keep checking back. Our kickoff event will be a webinar on the HBO series, “小飞机加速器下载,” followed soon after by a conversation with Nancy Sinkoff of Rutgers University on “The Political Journey of Holocaust Historian Lucy S. Dawidowicz.” Other events will include the Tenth Annual Gainesville Jewish Film Festival in December (postponed from last March), and a major international conference on Holocaust Memory: France and Its Former Colonies with scholars from North America, Europe, and Israel.
UF Students – you do not have to major in Jewish Studies to benefit from our programs. Check out our undergraduate certificate programs, and our many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate research scholarships. Recent student researchers include Simon Goldstone (anthropology) who is excavating the lost 17th century Sephardic Jewish colony in Suriname.
As always, we depend on the interest of our community in Gainesville, the state of Florida, and beyond. We have a new, constantly-updated university webpage, and a new Facebook page that will keep everyone current with our programming and which will include streamed events. Check out these new features, keep in touch, and stay up to date with us in 2020-2021.
Stay healthy and stay safe everyone!
